Jesus was 33 When he Was Crucified

|
Our Sr. Pastor mentioned in his sermon a while back that Jesus was 33 when he died.  I guess it struck a real cord with me because I am still thinking about it, I guess the fact that I am 34 has something to do with it.  I wonder at the things he accomplished, things that have had some staying power (2.1 Billion people claim to be his follower).

This has stirred me to reflect on my life, what have I accomplished in my 34 years? As I think about that I realize that the things that I pursue as "great things" are not very much like what Jesus considered to be great.  Jesus didn't start any programs, he only spoke to crowds that gathered around him naturally (he didn't do any advertising).  Jesus wasn't a dynamic personality, people were drawn to him because of who he was, not because he was a great leader, or a powerful person.  The only group he formed was a group that just kind of wandered around with him seemingly aimlessly.  He avoided crowds, had a quiet personality and what he considered great were things like meekness, mercy, peacemaking, the persecuted, hardly the makings of what I think of as great accomplishments.

I think I need to rethink what greatness looks like, and start being more like Jesus.

It can be proved that Jesus was never crucified as he never died on the cross

Thanks for your comment. I am curious to hear the proof for that. I would love to here more about that, so I can understand what you mean.

I know that quoting the Bible can't really be used as "proof" in the way you speak of it, but I choose to believe it and here is a quote from that book,

"Because the Jews did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. 33But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. (John 19:31-34)"

The flow of blood and water (while he was on the cross) indicates that he was dead.

You choose not to believe that, can you tell me why?

The point of the post however does not rely on whether or not Jesus died. There are 2.1 billion people who claim to be his follower, and the teachings of Jesus remain the important aspects of this post. The point is not whether or not Jesus died (although that is very important to me), but that I want to live as he did.

I know that you posted this a while ago, and I understand that your point is that you want to live as he did.
What I wanted to point out is that your pastor is wrong. Jesus was not 33 when he died. It is a common problem with pastors. Poor math skills. As a Pastor I can say I often fall into that category. However, this is one minor soap box I get up on.
You see, many forget the fact that Jesus was NOT born in the year 0, but in fact he was born between 4 and 7 BC. Herod died in 4BC and if He wanted all the babies killed that were 2 and under, that would place Jesus birth at between 4 and 6. Then you can add the approximate 1 year that he lived after making that decree. So Jesus could have been born as early as 7 BC.
So what does this mean. If Jesus died in the year 30AD (which is most likely the correct date) That would make Jesus anywhere between 34 and 37. Personally I would go with 36.
Ironically that is my age.
